Morneau Shepell's Legal Counsel Lynn Korbak honoured as a Women of Influence Diversity Champion

Magazine recognizes diversity leaders who make a difference

TORONTO, Nov. 13, 2012 /CNW/ - Morneau Shepell is pleased to announce that Lynn Korbak, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary for the Company, has been recognized by Women of Influence as a champion of diversity. Women of Influence, an organization that produces events with leading speakers from across the country, selected Korbak as one of its Canadian Diversity Champions for 2012.

Korbak was recognized in the Legal Leader category, and will be acknowledged in Women of Influence Magazine's Top 25 Women of Influence Edition, distributed nationwide in today's Globe and Mail.

Criteria for the honour include:

  • sponsoring and mentoring senior executive women;
  • advancing women in business;
  • leading and developing innovative diversity initiatives and programs across Canada;
  • championing diversity in the workplace and boardroom; and
  • contributing significantly to thought leadership in the areas of diversity and inclusion.

"It's a great honour to receive such recognition from Women of Influence, especially in the area of diversity," says Korbak.  "This is an opportunity for leaders to share their experience and inspire younger individuals who are just entering the workplace or new to their profession."

Korbak, who often speaks at industry events on behalf of Morneau Shepell, is very active in the community. She sits on the advisory board of the not-for-profit Humewood House, which provides services and care to young pregnant women and their children, and is a member of Legal Leaders for Diversity and Inclusion. That group involves general counsel and organizations dedicated to promoting diversity.

"I am very pleased to see Lynn being honoured as a diversity champion," said Alan Torrie, President and Chief Executive Officer of Morneau Shepell. "Her commitment to challenging people's thinking about diversity has helped raise awareness about workplace inclusion and acceptance."

Korbak says the first step in being an advocate for diversity is to recognize that each of us may have inherent, yet unintentional biases - assumptions or first impressions that may not always be accurate. The next step involves individuals consciously and deliberately being open to and inviting different points of view and approaches, which helps create an environment where people can demonstrate their unique points of view and feel supported in doing so.

With almost 20 years of experience in corporate/commercial and securities law, Korbak has worked with public and private companies, providing external and internal legal services. Says Korbak: "Today there are resources and all kinds of support to help individuals take advantage of diverse and inclusive opportunities. And if you find they're not available to you, you can create them."

Next on Korbak's agenda, continuing to find ways to show her company's support for inclusiveness in the workplace, including creating resources that all employees can leverage to become diversity champions themselves.
